Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Ellesmere (Llangollen) Canal

The 310 metre long Pontcysyllte aqueduct carries the Ellesmere Canal over the River Dee on 19 arches up to 39 metres above the river. It was designed by Thomas Telford who was serving as supervising engineer under the control of William Jessop. The cast iron trough, 3.6m wide x 1.6m deep, is carried on slender masonry piers which are partly hollow and taper at their summit. Ten years in construction it was officially opened to traffic on 26th November 1805. Iron for the trough and arches was produced at the adjacent Plaskynaston ironworks and foundry which was established c1800.
